Books

Dyslexia Outside-the-Box
"Dyslexia Outside-the-Box helps you understand the mind of a child with dyslexia and explains what’s going on in their outside-the-box brain in a way that can help you make them feel much better about themselves.
Dyslexia Outside-the-Box offers a balanced perspective showing how a dyslexic child’s challenges are directly connected to the flip-side strengths of their brain’s unique wiring:
Using evidenced-based information about dyslexia, the book is organized in an easy-to-understand format for anyone who knows and wants to support someone with dyslexia
It breaks down the many aspects of dyslexia and offers solutions that have the “whole person” in mind, showing how these children whose brains are delightfully wired differently can thrive, not just survive
The insights into reading, spelling, and writing challenges are accompanied by strategies for helping outside-the-box learners succeed in school
It’s filled with fun and easy suggestions, tips, and teaching ideas, and, best of all, encouragement for parents and teachers of dyslexic students
It’s a valuable resource for parents to use when conveying their children’s struggles and strengths to educators and professionals who work with them"
This is Dyslexia
"British social entrepreneur, founder and CEO of charity Made By Dyslexia, Kate Griggs has been shifting the narrative on dyslexia and educating people on its strengths since 2004. Having been surrounded by an extraordinary 'smorgasbord of Dyslexic Thinking' her whole life, Griggs knows the superpower of dyslexia all too well.
With a forward from Sir Richard Branson, This is Dyslexia covers everything you need to understand, value, and support Dyslexic Thinking. From offering practical advice on how to support the dyslexics in your life to breaking down the 6 Dyslexic Thinking skills in adults, Griggs shares her knowledge in an easily digestible guide.
This is Dyslexia redefines and reshapes what it means to be dyslexic. It explores how it has shaped our past and how harnessing its powers and strengths is vital to our future."
Overcoming Dyslexia
"From one of the world's preeminent experts on reading and dyslexia, the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and practical book available on identifying, understanding, and overcoming reading problems--now revised to reflect the latest research and evidence-based approaches.
Dyslexia is the most common learning disorder on the planet, affecting about one in five individuals, regardless of age or gender. Now a world-renowned expert gives us a substantially updated and augmented edition of her classic work: drawing on an additional fifteen years of cutting-edge research, offering new information on all aspects of dyslexia and reading problems, and providing the tools that parents, teachers, and all dyslexic individuals need."
Dyslexia Land
"In this guide, parents will find the help they need to navigate the tricky territory of the public school system with proven strategies, easy-to-follow directions, and maps. While other books take an academic approach and dwell on dyslexia as a disability, DyslexiaLand provides a practical approach, focusing instead on the many talents and abilities of children with dyslexia and how parents can help them thrive in school, at home, and in the community. This guide helps parents save significant time and money by pinpointing the support a dyslexic child needs early on and avoiding larger costs, financial and emotional, that a family may incur if a child's school struggles are not promptly identified and addressed."

Games
Everybody enjoys playing games that utilize their strengths. A common strength of dyslexic students is their visual-spatial awareness because dyslexic brains think in 3D rather than 2D. Because of this, I have compiled a list of multiple games (that I will continually be adding to) that I have found dyslexic students to love, mainly because of the visual-spatial aspect. I would encourage you to take a look at them and maybe order something for the family to try!

Spot It
There are many, many different ways that this can be played, as well as many different versions!
It is great to build a child's working memory, something dyslexic students typically have to strengthen.
Set
This is also a great working memory game. You can level it to make it easier or harder depending on where your child is at.
Tell Tale
You may have discovered that your dyslexic child LOVES to tell stories. This game helps them expand their creativity and would also be a great family game, especially for road trips!
Coggy
This is a great game to challenge your child in creative problem solving and tailors to their visual-spatial strength.
Qwirkle
I think of this one as "shape scrabble" and it is for those who don't do well with word games (aka most dyslexics).
Uzzle
This is another amazing visual-spatial game that I personally LOVE and would highly recommend.
Blokus
This helps develop your child's creative problems solving while tailoring to their big picture thinking skills.
Left Center Right
You may have noticed that your dyslexic child potentially struggles with their left and right. This would be a game that could either help them with that!
Color Code
You may have noticed that your dyslexic child potentially struggles with their left and right. This would be a game that could either help them with that!
The right tools can make a big difference in helping children with dyslexia feel confident, capable, and supported. Whether you try just one new resource or explore several, I hope these recommendations bring a little more ease and joy to your learning journey. If you have a favorite book, game, or app I didn’t include, I’d love to hear about it—let’s keep building a toolbox that truly works for our learners!
